Stella "Ted" Szatkowski

August 20, 1920 - February 21, 2017

In Loving Memory of Stella "Ted" Szatkowski

Stella Florence (Ted) Szatkowski (Glidewell) passed away on February 21, 2017. Born in 1920 to Marion Glidewell and Lethal Gossett Glidewell, she was nicknamed Ted at an early age.

Unsure of what career to enter, her father encouraged her to help her Aunt Sadie in her Speedway beauty shop. Ted took over the business in1953 and Ted's Beauty Shop was born. She eventually bought the entire building. She recently refurbished the building which is now the oldest building on Main Street in Speedway. Not one to sit still for long, Ted refused to retire and continued to work at the beauty shop for the next 64 years. She always credited her long life to staying busy.

She married William Szatkowski in 1956. Ted and her husband were members of the Scottish Rite and Shriners. After her husband's death, Ted continued to work at her beauty shop and to reach out to people. Over the years Ted became the surrogate mother and grandmother to her many nieces and nephews. It was often difficult to get Ted on the phone because everyone wanted to talk to Ted. It was not uncommon to wait hours before finally getting an opportunity to talk to her.

Because she loved people and having something to do, Ted organized a Saturday dinner group of friends. Every Saturday her group of 12-20 people would meet at a different restaurant to celebrate birthdays, holidays, or just being together.

Ted was preceded in death by her husband William, brothers Grant Glidewell and Jake Glidewell, and sister Iona Freund. She is survived by four generations of nieces and nephews. She is also survived by many loving friends. Private services were held at Crown Hill Funeral Home.
