Mrs. Mildred LaLond
February 29, 1924 - January 16, 2017
In Memory of Mildred Irene La Lond (Paul)
Mildred Irene La Lond (Paul) passed away peacefully on January 16, 2017 at the age of 92.
Mildred was born February 29, 1924 to Christopher Louis and Lillie Mae Paul, in the village of Fowler, Illinois. (Near Quincy, Illinois) She was the youngest of ten children and the last to pass away.
After high school, Mildred joined the war effort by working in a metal fabricating factory, producing items for the soldiers. She was asked to test as a draftsman, as the company foreman said she was too pretty and a distraction on the assembly line. She passed with flying colors and after completing the training she moved to Washington DC. There she worked for the Army Map Service, where she used aerial photographs to produce maps used for invasions and troop movement.
While in Washington DC she married Clarence Edward La Lond.
After the war the family relocated to Indiana, where in 1962 she began working for the US Geological Survey as a draftsman/cartographer. She remained there until her retirement in 1989.
After retiring, she decided to become a professional clown. As Quincy the Clown, she enjoyed volunteering in hospitals, nursing homes, birthday parties and even appeared on an Indy 500 parade float. During her clown years, she made many great friends and traveled all over the country attending conventions for clowning.
Millie loved her children and enjoyed life to the fullest. A house full of her kids and their friends never bothered her. She had a fun, recognizable laugh and was the family champion at Trivial Pursuit. She taught us that we could do anything, and to believe in ourselves. She gave us humor and a quick wit. As a family, laughter is our specialty.
Her nineteen grandchildren were also a source of great pride and joy. She loved spending time with them, helping them, and listening whenever she could.
Mildred was a descendant of four Mayflower passengers.
Mildred is preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Edward La Lond and her daughter, H. Frances “Sis” Board.
She is survived by five sons, one son in law and one daughter. C. Patrick La Lond (Doreta), Murel R La Lond, Son in law Robert Board, David H. La Lond, Dustan B La Lond , Shawn E La Lond (Kim) and Rene' I Deranian (Steve), as well as her nineteen grandchildren and many great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at Crown Hill Funeral Home in Indianapolis, Monday, January 23. Visitation from 11-1, service 1pm with internment following.
Donations can be made in lieu of flowers to the Alzheimer's Association
